Swim spas combine the functionalities of an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a hot tub, delivering fitness and relaxation at a fraction of the cost. They can be easy to work into a floor plan and can be installed in practically any location: indoors or outdoors, above ground or in-ground. Plus, with low operating costs and built-in energy efficiency, home swim spas are far more affordable and sustainable than their full-sized pool counterparts, serving up the best of both worlds.
Swim Spas generally fall in to four main categories:
Open Plan Swim Spa
Spas with counter currents in one volume of water More compact than standard above ground swimming pools, swimming against the swim spa’s powerful counter-current jets will give even the strongest swimmer an excellent work-out. Spas with counter currents in one volume of water are very popular, mainly because you can move from the spa end to the counter current end without getting out. Many of these spas can seat up to 5 or 6 people plus swimmer. The drawback is that when there is one volume of water, the water temperature is unlikely to be good for both relaxing and swimming at the same time. The relaxing spa temperature of 37C is too hot for a good work out swim if you are at all serious about swimming.
Swim Spa and Hot Tub Combined
One unit which combines a spa and a counter current pool but two separate volumes of water The spa and counter current swimming pool in one unit, but with two separate volumes of water, is a better option if you are going to do some serious swimming. With this type of swim spa you can adjust the swimming end temperature down which will mean you can exercise for an extended period and not get over hot. Then when you have completed your swim, you can slide over the wall into the Hot Tub and relax in much warmer water, typically 10 degrees or more difference between the two water temperatures. With this type of swim spa the two separate ends have independent heating and filtration, and the cover allows you to open either just the swimming pool with the counter current, just the Hot Tub, or both at the same time .
Exercise pools which only have a counter current, but can be matched to a separate spa/Hot tub in the same colour but are not connected The dedicated exercise pools are designed for people to swim in. These are not spas, there are no seats, there are no blowers, its whole purpose is to swim. These pools are deeper and offer a superb swim experience, with wide mouth, high power, turbulence free counter-current jets. The laminar turbulence free flow of water recreates a realistic swimming experience to perfect your stroke. If you need to have a Hot Tub as well you can choose one to be colour matched and positioned in your garden to suit your requirements.
Resistance pools with passive swim systems With no swim pumps and jets, the purchase price and running cost of these pools is much lower than fitness pools with complex, multi-pump systems. In addition, we find some swimmers prefer to train in an environment which provides resistance, without a torrent of water flow pumped towards them. You can include under water work outs that are not just swimming. Have a look at the underwater exercise bikes, treadmills and weights.
If you are considering a swim spa please do look at our one piece pools which can offer the luxury of a larger swimming area, counter current systems as well as dedicated seating with massage jets.
